Better bat house with cedar shingles

I think I could improve my bat house design (efficiency of materials) by using cedar shingles instead of 1×6 boards. I can also use 1×4 pieces for the sides, but the 2×4 works really well for the top and since I have to buy an eight-foot piece I might as well use it.

If I did get away from 2×4 sides, I could get 12 tops from a single 2×4. Hmm.  I need to check prices but I think I would need to get my raw materials way down under $5 per house to be able to make these for resale. Not that I plan to do that, but what else am I going to do with 12 bat houses?
